A Catholic Wedding in Paradise

Celebrate your love with a Catholic destination wedding that brings together sacred tradition and a breathtaking setting. Several all-inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Dominican Republic have their own on-site chapels — from oceanfront chapels with floor-to-ceiling windows to colonial-style chapels set in a village plaza — so you can marry in a church setting and walk straight to your beachfront reception.

A Catholic wedding abroad involves more planning than a symbolic ceremony: your home parish, the local diocese, and the resort all play a part. Our Certified Destination Wedding Specialists coordinate the resort side — chapel booking, the resort's Catholic ceremony arrangements, and your guests' travel — while you work with your priest on the sacramental requirements.

Start with your home parish. Talk to your priest before you book a resort. For a sacramental wedding abroad, your paperwork is typically prepared by your home parish and sent through your diocese to the diocese where you'll marry — and that process can take several months.

Your Catholic Ceremony Options Abroad

Catholic Ceremony in a Resort Chapel

A sacramental wedding in the resort's on-site chapel, officiated by a local priest (or your own priest with permission), with your parish paperwork approved through both dioceses.

Nuptial Mass

Some couples add a full Mass to the ceremony. Availability depends on the priest and the resort chapel, so ask early if a Mass is important to you.

Marry at Home, Celebrate Abroad

Marry in your home parish, then hold a symbolic ceremony and reception at the resort — the simplest route when paperwork timelines are tight.

Church and civil marriage are separate in Mexico. A Catholic ceremony in Mexico is not legally binding on its own — couples also complete a civil ceremony, either at the resort with a local judge or at home. Requirements vary by country and diocese; your VFL specialist and your priest will confirm what applies to you.

All-Inclusive Resorts with On-Site Chapels

These resorts in our collection have their own chapel for Catholic ceremonies, so you and your guests never leave the property. Chapel capacity varies — tell us your guest count and we'll confirm the best fit.

Chapel availability, capacity, and Catholic ceremony fees change over time and vary by resort. See more chapel options in our guide to beach resorts with chapels, and confirm current details with your VFL specialist before booking.

Essential Steps

Your Catholic Destination Wedding Planning Checklist

Catholic destination wedding planning checklist for a resort chapel ceremony

Follow this checklist so every part of your Catholic wedding abroad is thoughtfully planned — from your first conversation with your priest to the reception.

  • Meet with Your Home Parish Priest

Start 9–12 months ahead. Your priest opens your marriage file and explains the requirements for marrying outside your parish.

  • Complete Marriage Preparation

Finish Pre-Cana or your diocese's marriage preparation program, which is typically required before the paperwork can be approved.

  • Gather Your Documents

Recently issued baptismal certificates, confirmation records, and any other documents your parish requests — some dioceses require translations into Spanish.

  • Choose Your Resort Chapel & Date

We confirm chapel availability, capacity, and the resort's Catholic ceremony arrangements for your date before you commit.

  • Send Your File to the Local Diocese

Your home diocese forwards your approved paperwork to the diocese where you'll marry, and the officiating priest is confirmed.

  • Arrange Your Civil Marriage

In Mexico the church ceremony isn't legally binding on its own, so plan a civil ceremony at the resort or at home.

  • Plan the Ceremony & Reception

Choose readings, music, and rings to be blessed during the ceremony, then celebrate at a beachfront or ballroom reception.

Catholic Destination Wedding FAQs

Can we have a Catholic wedding at an all-inclusive resort?
Yes, at resorts with an on-site chapel, such as Moon Palace Cancun, Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya, Dreams Tulum, Dreams Sapphire, and the Barceló Maya complex. A sacramental Catholic wedding also requires approval of your paperwork through your home parish and the local diocese, so start the process early.
Can our own priest travel with us to officiate?
Often, yes — with permission from the local diocese, which your priest requests in advance. Otherwise, a local priest officiates. We confirm the resort's policy and any related fees before you book.
Is a Catholic wedding in Mexico legally binding?
Not on its own. In Mexico, church and civil marriage are separate, so couples also complete a civil ceremony — either with a local judge at the resort or at home before or after the trip.
How far in advance should we start planning a Catholic destination wedding?
Plan on 9–12 months. Marriage preparation, document gathering, and the transfer of your file between dioceses take time, and popular resort chapels book up early for peak-season dates.
Do resorts charge extra for a Catholic ceremony?
Usually. Many resorts add a Catholic ceremony fee on top of the wedding package to cover the priest, chapel, and paperwork coordination. Fees vary by resort, so we include them in the pricing we send you.
What if we can't complete the paperwork in time?
Many couples marry in their home parish, then hold a symbolic ceremony and reception at the resort. You still get the destination celebration, and the sacramental wedding happens in your own church. See our symbolic ceremonies guide.
