Puerto Morelos is the municipality immediately south of Cancún — the northernmost part of the Riviera Maya corridor. Resorts here are technically in the "Riviera Cancun" area (the northern tip of RM), combining the shortest RM transfer time with the undeveloped, natural coastal character that distinguishes RM from the urban Cancún Hotel Zone. There is no commercial strip or walkable town center at this zone's resorts — the appeal is a quieter, more natural beach setting without city-center access.

The beach at this zone varies by property. Secrets Maroma Beach sits on the Travel Channel's four-time World's Best Beach — a wide, powder-white, calm-water arc protected by an ecological reserve. The other Zone 1 properties have good Caribbean beaches but don't carry the same singular beach credential. The setting throughout Zone 1 is low-key and natural — jungle, beach, and resort, without the commercial activity of PDC or the remoteness of Tulum.

Who this zone fits

Couples whose guest group includes a significant proportion of weekend travelers (flying in Friday, leaving Sunday) benefit most from Zone 1's transfer time. The difference between a 25-minute transfer and a 55-minute transfer is 1 hour round-trip per guest per travel day — not trivial for guests with short trips. Playa del Carmen is the largest city in the Riviera Maya and the only point in the entire RM corridor where all-inclusive guests can walk off the resort property and immediately access a commercial downtown — La Quinta Avenida (5th Avenue), a pedestrian shopping, dining, and nightlife strip running directly from the beach into the city center. No other RM zone offers this. Guests who want to explore restaurants, bars, boutiques, and nightlife independently — without a shuttle or taxi — can do so by walking out the resort gate. Mid-corridor setting is natural RM — Caribbean beach, jungle surroundings, no walkable commercial center. The beaches here are good Caribbean beaches (Akumal Beach has the sea turtle snorkeling) but not ranked as highly as Maroma.
