A South Asian wedding is a program, not a single ceremony, so the right resort is the one that can host every event with the right space, sound, and food. This guide walks through what each event needs, how the major resort brands compare, and how to choose between Riviera Maya and Cancun and Punta Cana. For a brand-by-brand list, see our South Asian destination wedding resorts page.

What Makes a South Asian Wedding Different for a Resort
A standard resort wedding is one ceremony and one reception. A South Asian wedding often spans several days, a larger and more multi-generational guest list, long events, live music, and food that has to meet specific dietary needs. Four things decide whether a resort fits.
Several venues, not one
Each event has a different footprint. Look for a resort that can hold the Baraat, the ceremony, and the reception in separate spaces, and that can reserve them for the right dates.
Late and loud is normal
A Sangeet is a party. Ask about the sound limit and end time for each venue, not just the resort overall.
Menus that fit your family
Ask about vegetarian, Jain, and halal needs, and whether the resort has an Indian cuisine specialist.
A coordinator who knows the program
Ask whether your coordinator has South Asian wedding training and has run these events before.
Event by Event: What Each One Needs from a Resort
Programs differ by family and tradition, so treat this as a checklist of questions rather than a fixed schedule.
| Event | What to ask the resort |
|---|---|
| Welcome party | Can it be held outdoors or in a private restaurant, and what is the guest limit? |
| Mehndi | Is there a shaded, seated space with room for artists and tables? Any limits on staining or henna? |
| Haldi | Is there a space where turmeric and flowers are allowed, and how is cleanup handled? |
| Sangeet | What are the venue's end time and sound limit? Is a DJ, dhol, or live performance permitted? |
| Baraat | What route is available, how wide is it, and can a horse, dhol, and dancers use it? |
| Wedding ceremony | Can the venue hold a mandap and your guest count for a ceremony that may last two hours or more? |
| Reception | Is there a ballroom or beach venue for dinner and dancing, and how does the menu work for your family? |

How the Major Resort Brands Compare
| Brand | What it publishes for South Asian weddings | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Dreams | Dulha & Dulhan (5 events) and Shaadi (6 events over 3 days) at seven properties in Mexico and Punta Cana, with a South Asian-certified coordinator, mandap setup, Baraat coordination, and an Indian cuisine specialist | The clearest named program. Family-friendly. Confirm which package each property offers. |
| Paradisus La Esmeralda | A Cypress Ballroom with a 3 AM entertainment permit and the over-water Kanna Bridge for a Baraat | Playa del Carmen. About 45 minutes from Cancun airport. The 3 AM permit applies to the Cypress Ballroom only. |
| Breathless | No named South Asian package at its four properties. Strengths are DJ-led nightlife and Ballroom or Beach buyouts | Adults-only. Ask the on-site team to build a custom program. |
| Palace Resorts | South Asian options at select properties | Often considered for larger groups. Confirm the property. |
| Barceló | South Asian wedding options in the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, and Punta Cana | Large resort complexes. Ask about Monday to Thursday discounts. |
| Hyatt Ziva and Zilara | South Asian-certified wedding programs in Cap Cana | Confirm current offerings and dates. |
Offerings change by property and season. We confirm every program with the resort before you book.

We do not yet have a dedicated Cancun page, so for Cancun-area Dreams properties start with the Dreams South Asian weddings guide. Ten Questions to Ask Before You Book
- Is your coordinator trained in South Asian weddings, and have they run a multi-day program?
- Which events does the package include, and what costs extra?
- Which venues fit my guest count for each event?
- What are the sound limits and end times for each venue?
- What route is available for the Baraat?
- Can I bring my own priest, decorator, caterer, or DJ, and what are the fees?
- What vegetarian, Jain, and halal options can the kitchen prepare?
- What is the rain plan for each outdoor event?
- How many rooms must we book to qualify for a package? See what "free" really means.
- Which dates work best? See the best time to marry and the planning timeline.
A Note on the Legal Side
Most couples hold the religious ceremony at the resort and complete the legal marriage at home. If you want a legal ceremony abroad, rules in Mexico and the Dominican Republic differ, so read our legal requirements guide and confirm the current rules with a specialist.
